Me Anga Whakamua – Facing the Future

Me Anga Whakamua – Facing the Future is a powerful portrait series created to mark the 250th anniversary of the first encounters between Māori and Captain Cook, capturing the memories, reflections, and aspirations of tāngata whenua involved in the Tuia 250 commemorations. First exhibited at Hihiaua Cultural Centre in 2020 and later at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington in 2025, the project is accompanied by a stunning coffee table book published in 2021. Featuring Diane Stoppard’s evocative portraits alongside interviews and essays by Tohunga Te Warahi Hetaraka, Professor Alison Jones, and Justice Hetaraka, the book explores the impact of those first meetings and the shared heritage of Māori and Pākehā. Through moving images and words, it carries an enduring message of remembrance, hope, and positivity of a shared future.
